Honda HR-V vs. Competitors for Sale in Lincoln, RI
One thing’s for sure: the compact crossover segment is blazing hot right now, and it has been for a while. With this vehicle style’s nice blend of sedan maneuverability and SUV practicality, it’s no wonder so many shoppers are gravitating towards them. One of the leading models in this class is the 2020 Honda HR-V, because it’s affordable, sporty, fuel efficient, spacious, and uniquely versatile thanks to Honda’s Magic Seat (more on that feature later). Although it certainly holds a top position in its class, the HR-V goes up against models like the Toyota C-HR, Ford EcoSport, Hyundai Kona, and Jeep Renegade. But the 2020 HR-V rises past its rivals in some significant ways, which we’ll examine in more detail.
Fuel Efficiency and Drivetrain
Of all the vehicles mentioned above, the HR-V is the most fuel efficient. With its EPA-estimated 28 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway, it beats the C-HR’s 27 city/31 highway, the EcoSport’s 27 city/29 highway, the Kona’s 27 city/33 highway, and the Renegade’s 22 city/30 highway EPA estimates. It helps that the HR-V uses a continuously variable transmission (CVT), as that type of transmission is better at optimizing fuel economy over regular geared transmissions, which the other vehicles aside from the C-HR use. Although the C-HR has a CVT, it lacks the option of all-wheel drivetrain (the HR-V comes standard with front-wheel drive, and AWD is optional). The Jeep Renegade comes standard with front-wheel drive with available four-wheel drive, which is not as desirable as all-wheel since it doesn’t adjust individual axles to optimize traction the way AWD does.
The HR-V is also quite spacious with its 58.8 cubic feet of maximum cargo space. The C-HR only provides 37 cu. ft., the EcoSport 50 cu. ft., the Kona 45.8 cu. ft., and the Renegade 50.8 cu. ft. Honda’s Magic Seat, which was mentioned above, helps bolster its already generous space since it can be configured in multiple arrangements to help accommodate extra-long or unusually shaped objects. None of the rivals listed here has such an innovative seating system. The occupants will also have a bit more space to spread out in the HR-V as it yields 100.1 cu. ft. of overall passenger volume. The C-HR (86 cu. ft.), EcoSport (91.1 cu. ft.), and Kona (94.1 cu. ft.) are all less spacious. While the Renegade and the HR-V have precisely the same passenger volume figure, the Renegade falls short in other prominent areas.
Style and Appearance
While looks are definitely subjective and every buyer will have their own favorite, the HR-V stands out with a design that brings to mind a coupe, with hidden rear doors that let it masquerade as a sleek two-door. The C-HR has a similar look to the HR-V, although as you saw above, it’s a lot smaller and doesn’t offer the all-wheel drivetrain that most drivers in New England consider a must-have.
